Bóthar's Final Journey to Kosovo

Since the first shipment in 1991, thousands of Irish farmers have donated livestock through Bóthar's pass-on gift model, helping vulnerable farming families rebuild livelihoods, improve food security and create sustainable futures. This impact has been made possible through the generosity of Irish farm families, schools, community groups, volunteers and supporters, together with the invaluable support of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Shipping partners, Shannon Airport, Rosslare Harbour and mart facilities across Ireland have also played a vital role in ensuring animals reached their destinations safely.

When Bóthar began working in Kosovo, its ambition was to support farming families, strengthen rural livelihoods and help communities build a more secure future. Thanks to the generosity of Irish farmers and supporters, the programme exceeded those ambitions many times over, enabling thousands of families to establish sustainable livelihoods of their own. 

Bóthar's long-standing partner in Kosovo, NGO Meshqerra, worked tirelessly with recipient families to ensure every donation achieved its full potential. As a result, the final shipment in October 2026 should not be viewed as an ending, but as the culmination of a remarkable success story. This final journey represents more than the conclusion of a programme. It is an opportunity to celebrate a lasting achievement and recognise the thousands of people whose commitment, generosity and hard work made it possible.

As Bóthar prepares for this historic shipment, the charity are encouragig farmers who are in a position to donate an in-calf heifer to come forward. The impact of a single donated animal can last for generations, creating opportunities and hope long after the journey is complete.
