How this helps

Bóthar’s Irish dairy cows have become life saving heroes in many parts of the world. Irish dairy cows will produce up to 20 times as much nutritious milk every day as the average local cow in Uganda, Malawi, and Cameroon.

Milk & cheese from the living gift of a cow instantly improves the diet of an impoverished family and also produces enough milk for them to sell and earn an income. Suddenly mothers and fathers are in a position to purchase food and medicine for their families. Over time they can even send their children to school!

Bóthar also engages in cross-breeding Irish bulls with local cows, producing an animal that gives approximately 25% of an Irish cow’s milk yield - still four times more productive than the local animal!

All Souls Appeal - Give a share of a goat...

How this helps

You are about to purchase a share of an Irish dairy goat. This is what your gift will do.

Giving the gift of an Irish dairy goat to a family in Rwanda or Tanzania would change the lives of a struggling family forever. An Irish dairy goat will produce up to five times as much milk as a local cow. This is enough to enable the family to enjoy milk in their diet and raise money from the sale of extra milk and cheese.

Families who receive Irish dairy goats from Bóthar would often not have enough land to support a larger animal, so your gift of a dairy goat will go to the poorest of the poor. Irish dairy goats are very well suited to our East African project countries; they also thrive in our projects in Eastern Europe. Irish dairy goats are friendly and easy to manage. They will kid each year, and because they often produce twins, a farmer can quickly start to build up a small herd. Giving a gift of an Irish dairy goat to a family in Rwanda or Tanzania would change the lives of a struggling family forever.

All Souls Appeal - The Humble Bee

How this helps

When you think of Bóthar you might think of our dairy cow and dairy goat programmes, but in actual fact, one of the most effective programmes that we use to help the very poorest of the poor in the developing world is our nutritious Honey Bee programme.

Honey Bees are very suitable for people who might not be able to care for a larger animal. When space and money are at a premium, bees are the perfect solution as Honey Bees require almost no space and once established are inexpensive to maintain. Every participant receives regular training from other established bee-keepers in the group and from a local agricultural advisory group who help with the practical and theoretical aspects of bee-husbandry, the production of honey and the sale of wax.

With these skills, participants can earn an income by selling surplus honey and wax at the local market. As is the Bóthar way, once a participant is established and earning an income they need to pass on the gift to another family waiting to join the programme and supply them with three beehives.
