First visit by the First Lady of Uganda

IT was a day of firsts on Monday, April 13th, when the First Lady of Uganda and Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Mrs. Janet Museveni, arrived in Ireland to meet Bóthar to thank the organisation and its donors for the farm animals it had donated in the past to the people of Uganda and she invited Bóthar to re-introduce the programme there.

She also visited Bóthar’s calfrearing programme at Shelton Abbey Open Prison and was very pleased with the quality of the herd she saw there. The heifers are reared by the prisoners under Farm Manager Thomas Gregan.

These calves are donated by farmers, schools and community groups from all over the country and are reared by inmates for 18 months. Once they mature, they are airlifted to needy families in the developing world, each of whom will receive expert training in livestock care before receiving their animal. Each family that receives the gift of an Irish dairy heifer agrees to pass-on the first-born female calf to another needy family.

Over the last five years, nearly 380 calves have been generously donated to this programme. Thank you sincerely to everyone that has supported this programme.
