Haiti can be helped

Haiti can be hepled

On January 12th, disaster struck Haiti. A country that was one of the poorest in the world, is now possibly the poorest. Hundreds of thousands dead, hundreds of thousands homeless, children orphaned, livelihoods destroyed. The massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti was the strongest to hit the country in 200 years and was felt as far away as Cuba. The quake brought down buildings including the presidential palace, hotels, a hospital, and the UN headquarters in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince.

It took half a minute for last month’s earthquake to destroy Haiti – rebuilding it will take years. Complete devastation. Complete chaos.

But even before the earthquake that killed, according to the Haitian government, as many as 300,000, three-quarters of Haiti's 9 million people lived on less than $2 a day.

As a Bóthar donor, you may know that Bóthar had worked in Haiti for a number of years and completed some of it’s projects only last summer. Bóthar will be re-activating many of its successful projects all around the country ranging from training in sustainable farming and crop diversity to gifts of livestock, seeds, trees and grains to training in nutrition.

It is estimated that it will take $11.5 billion to help rebuild earthquake-stricken Haiti. Bóthar, thanks to your donation, will be playing it's part in this. The situation that the country is facing is difficult but not desperate.

While emergency aid really does get help to where it is needed, the long term development that Bóthar brings is crucial. They want help, they need help. Bóthar is going to get them back on the road to recovery.

I would like to thank you for contributing to the Easter Recovery Appeal. I know that times have been tough on lots of people this year and it’s getting harder to ask people, but we need to ask. If we don’t, we can’t get the help to where it’s needed most.
