POPPY is the name of a new children’s book, the profits from which will go to support Bóthar. The text and the artwork for the book were gifted to Bóthar by well-known children’s author, Mary Arrigan from Roscrea.
This beautifully illustrated book follows the story of an Irish heifer calf that was eventually donated to Bóthar and found a new home with a needy family in modern-day Albania. The story creates very interesting contrasts between life in Ireland and the struggle that families in some parts of our world have to go through to simply survive. The story also illustrates the generosity of children and the benefit of awareness of the needs of others. The book will make a lovely birthday or Christmas gift and carries a valuable moral for adults and children alike. The book contains the perfect example of how the Bóthar concept of using livestock actually works; the birth of an Irish calf, the involvement of the farming community, airlifting the animals to underdeveloped countries and eventually helping poor people to help themselves. All profits from the sale of the book will go directly to support the work of Bóthar.
Mary Arrigan, the author, is a keen Bóthar supporter and had the idea of creating this publication for two reasons; “I like Bóthar and admire the work they do in the developing world. I wanted to spread their story but I also wanted to create some funds for the organisation as well; POPPY, I hope, will do both jobs very well”.
Pat McCarrick of Bóthar said of the book; “passing on the gift is one of the cornerstones in the Bóthar concept; we receive donor’s gifts here in Ireland and we in turn pass them on to the needy families we help all over the world. Mary’s book is just such a gift and its profits will help struggling families to have a better life”.
The book will be launched locally at a signing by the author in Racket Hall Hotel, Roscrea on Friday 20th November at 7.30pm. The author will attend and sign copies of the book. It retails at €10 and is available direct from Bóthar – Fundraising Projects Office, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. www.bothar.org.
