Bóthar in Zambia:
Bóthar supported its first project in Zambia in 1999. Bóthar has dairy cattle, goat and water supply projects in Zambia. Bóthar airlifted 160 dairy goats from Ireland in October 2004 and 200 dairy goats in February 2005 to Zambia. Bóthar has also supported its projects by supplying vehicles, dairy equipment, artificial insemination straws and veterinary supplies.

Kabwe Rural Community Development Project
Location: Central Province, Kabwe District
Number of families: 220
Animals: 318 Draft Cattle, 120 dairy cattle, 560 meat goats & 400 dairy goats
Other inputs: Vegetable seeds, fodder & fruit tree seedlings
Training: Livestock husbandry, forage establishment, environmental management, gender issues and HIV and AIDS prevention, control and impact mitigation
Brief synopsis: Kabwe was once a thriving mining centre. The families who were once dependent on copper mining as a source of income now have to depend on agriculture for their way of life. This project will help these smallholder farmers attain food security through the distribution of different types of livestock, improved agricultural methods and HIV and AIDS awareness
Pass-on obligations: 204 families
Expected benefits: Increased nutrition of beneficiary families, increase in crop production, school enrolment and a viable regular income for all project families as well as indirect benefits to the local communities
Local partner(s): Heifer Zambia, Women for Change, Land O'Lakes and the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture will collaborate at the local level of the project

Ndola Dairy Cattle Project
Location: Ndola District, Copperbelt Province

Other inputs: Dairy equipment, a vehicle
Training: Pasture establishment, feed conservation, animal management and health, farm accounts, social topics.
Brief synopsis: Provision of employment opportunities, mitigate the impact of AIDS, increase crop yields, household income and nutrition, as well as focus on agro-ecological farming.
Pass-on obligations: Members will pass on first female offspring of each animal received.
Expected benefits: Within 3 years, at least 80% of project beneficiaries feel their livelihood has improved.

Project title:
Twalumba Women's Draught Cattle Project
Location: Mwambashi, Copperbelt Province
Number of families: 90
Animals: Dairy Heifers and Bulls
Other inputs: Labour and local materials for animal shelters, three boreholes and irrigation pumps to each recipient group.
Training: Value-based training in sustainable agriculture
Brief synopsis: To tackle poverty, AIDS and unemployment through improved food production and income generation.
Pass-on obligations: 60 families will pass on to others during this period.
Expected benefits: 80% of the families are expected to achieve increased crop production and income.

Project title:
Water Supply for Sustainable Livelihoods.
Location: Kafue in the Lusaka province; Mumbwa in the Central Province; Mazabuka, Choma, Monze, Kalomo, Livingstone in the Southern province.
Number of families: 880
Other inputs: Labour and local materials for water point construction.
Brief synopsis: 35 wells will be bored in 11 Heifer projects to further enhance livelihoods of these drought-prone communities, allowing also for the irrigation of vegetable gardens, agro-ecological farming and the strengthening of management capacities.
Pass-on obligations: Acquired skills will be passed on to other community members
Expected benefits: It is hoped that by the end of the project, the frequency of disease and death in livestock will be reduced by 80%, 70% of the project groups will have attained gender equity, there will be equal sharing of resources with 80% of the communities having jointly developed an integrated resource management plan. It is also hoped that 80% will have increased income levels from vegetable production.
