Bóthar in Romania:

Bóthar’s first project in Romania was initiated in 2001. Since then, there have been number of projects there involving a variety of animals, including fish dairy cows and sheep. As part of a pass-on in a dairy project there, farmers are providing disabled children in orphanages and hospitals in the locality with food and milk.

Number of Families Animals: Pure breed dairy heifers.

Number of Families Other inputs: One milk collection plant and 30 milking units.

Number of Families Training: Livestock management, milk processing and farm product marketing.

Number of Families Brief synopsis: This project will initially target 150 farming families who will be provided with one heifer each. In addition to this, the farmers will also be provided with thirty milking machines and a milk collection plant will also be established. In addition to the pass on, these farmers will provide food and milk for institutionalized children with disabilities in hospitals, orphanages and special schools in the locality, many of whom are seriously undernourished.

Number of Families Pass-on obligations: All 150 families have to pass-on a dairy heifer within 2 years.

Number of Families Training: Training will be given in animal breeding and farm product marketing.

Number of Families Brief synopsis: In the highlands of the Bucovina Region, 100 Turcana sheep and ten rams are being distributed, a breed of local sheep naturally adapted to this highland environment. From these sheep numerous traditional products can be made and help and knowledge on how to effectively sell this produce is being provided, emphasising the importance of creating a producer’s network. In the three years this project will run, it is expected that each recipient family will pass on 10 sheep and one ram to other needy families, strengthening the community and protecting the highland environment.

Number of Families Pass-on obligations: A sheep of 20kg or more will be passed on to a new family selected by the committee based on the initial selection criteria. Male offspring will be used primarily for breeding local sheep, slaughtered for home consumption, or sold. Each family will pass on 10 sheep during 3 years.

Number of Families Expected benefits: 20 families from Borca Village will achieve self-sustainability, improving nutrition, increasing income while preserving traditional activities.
